“You Got Me” was originally titled “Til the Cows Come Home.”
I thought I was being so clever because there is no such line in the song, although the implicit meaning of the phrase is.
Still.
I gave into the obvious after one too many requests for the song went like this: “Play the you got me song.”
The schtick setup I mostly recite before playing this song is true: A stray cat my wife fell for and let in on our porch gave us fleas. I hate fleas.
We installed a leaky roof when we added a back porch to the house. Still ongoing!
We were having some AC problems with a car.
Melissa was on a road trip. I was alone. A perfect time to write a love song, and I started with the reality:
You got fleas in your bed,
the roof’s gotta a leak
Your car won’t start
and it sure does seem
like it’s all falling apart,
but you got me
After that, it came together about as quickly as I could write.
It’s now one of my crowd pleasers. Almost always guaranted to get a good response.
After such a setup, I shouldn’t have been surprised when someone asked me how Melissa felt about me saying I “never liked your sister, bless her tiny black heart.”
After the factual opening (fleas, leaks and car), the rest is made up, fictional. Melissa doesn’t have a sister. Nor is her ex paying our mortgage.
