We have been sheltered temporarily on Chimney Creek since October.
Shortly after we moved in, Melissa’s kayak was stolen — truly adding insult to injury. When I mentioned it to my friend and long-time Tybee resident, he said, well, you know they call that Criminal Creek. And I did remember that in our first year here I bought a Criminal Creek T-shirt at Café Loco’s Crabbing Competition.
So, I started out with a song about Criminal Creek but it became “Mexico,” an upbeat tune that would be just another I’ve-had-it, getaway, run away song, if not for the chorus. It is a surprise twist on the immigration issue.
And for those who think all songs, particularly first-person tunes, are totally autobiographical, I will remind you that exaggeration and outright fictionalization are the hallmarks of good songwriting.
Mexico
I ain’t complaining though it’s a painful fact
Been flooded twice now, can’t make my way back.
Gotta leave Chimney Creek ,find a new home
Been thinking ‘bout, checking out Mexico.
Never been further than California
Couldn’t afford to live there now if I wanted
I need a place that won’t cost me my soul
been thinking about, checking out Mexico.
(CHORUS):
They say everyone wants to come here
They can take my place and let me disappear
Some place warmer, maybe on a coast
been thinking about, checking out Mexico.
I owe more money than I’ve ever made
It ain’t cheap living in a constant haze
Need one more deal, one more score
been thinking about, checking out Mexico.
Great lyrics. Just back from Mexico so this really resonates. By accident saw the caravan. Read somewhere you were fantasizing about going out west. I have an idea. No longer on FB so could you get back to me by email?
after all ya’ll have been through you both deserve to have a saint named after you –
Enjoyed this, all about today’s life, enjoy all your song, they are all real life.
Keeping it transparent. Always vulnerable. Love it.
