Into Nowhere (a demo)

Sometimes I feel obligated to write a song, especially when one comes along that compels attention. Such was the case when I read a local headline that declared: “Meth Lab Busted on Moon River.”

The Muse dictates that I explore what is the song that I’m supposed to write regarding meth use. Usually, in cases like this (“The Bullet,” for example), I’m being directed to look at the situation from a different point of view than one’s first reaction.

For example, meth is the poor’s illicit drug; cocaine is the rich’s bad boy. Eric Clapton’s “Cocaine” makes coke down right appealing. No one can make meth appealing. So why do so many do it?

While I know nothing, except what I’ve heard, about meth and its effects on the body and brain, I do know a few things about addiction and the soul-sick that accompanies any drug dependency.

Among all the news about the opioid epidemic, meth has fallen off the front page, but in fact, it is making a vicious comeback. Perhaps this songs gets at one of the reasons.

Into Nowhere

you gotta get way down
into nowhere
you gotta get way down
into nowhere
you gotta get way down
if you’re wanna disappear.

so let’s pretend
they’ll be no regrets
yes let’s pretend
they’ll be no regrets
I don’t blame you
you don’t blame me yet.

(bridge):

they’re making meth
on Moon River tonight
Lord sweet Jesus is in for
a helluva fight.

you might be surprised
about life out there
yeah you might be surprised
about life on the edge
it ain’t what you think
so don’t waste your breath.

(lead)

(bridge)

well you got no choice
about being born
no your got no choice
about where you’re born
so tell me why every prince
gets a whipping boy.

(V1)

P.S.

A whipping boy received corporal punishment for a prince’s transgressions. The prince was not punished himself because of his royal status.
