There were signs (a demo)

Signs is what is called a “list” song.

In this case, lists of all the ideas people have of this mysterious stranger, who is never identified.

Better left to the listener’s imagination.

I think the underlying implication is how we become consumed by other people, especially celebrities and politicians.

And too often we make the mistake of believing these people have the answer, which time tells us that they never do.

The above is just me and my guitar.

                 THERE WERE SIGNS

Some people said he’s a gambler, but nobody saw him bet
Some people said he was a captain, but they never saw his ship
Some said he was a prophet, but no one ever heard him preach
And some who said he’s the devil, and you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Some said he was salesman who gave away his wares for free
Some said he was a doctor who wished he’d been a priest
Some said he was a tunesmith, but no one ever heard his songs
Some said he’s a carpenter working for, his son.

Baby I don’t wish you any harm
But you need to stop wishing on those stars
And baby please don’t cry, wolf
There ain’t but one way that ends, and it ain’t good

Some said he was a lawyer who never lost a case
Some said he was an actor who was born to be on a stage
Other said he was a farmer at the end of his rope (row)
Some said he was a peddler looking to swap gold, for hope.

Now there may be angels among men
But there’re still genocides every year
if you don’t believe this is the last hurrah
You might be surprised when the executions start

They say there’ll come a time for us fools and children
Now you need to know they-re the only ones above suspicion
The rest of you are left debating what went wrong
Let’s just say, there were signs but they’re all gone (x2)

you’ll have to give me time to understand the message – lyrics are fascinating but mysterious – it’s an interesting puzzle for me though
